HRTEM and Spectroscopy

We correlate high-resolution transmission-electron microscopy (HRTEM) with different spectroscopic techniques to gain new insights in the physics of nanoelectronic transport devices.

Breathing-like modes in multiwalled CNTs

We correlated Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM on an individual multiwalled carbon nanotube proving that the walls of the CNT behave as coupled harmonic oscillators. This leads to a strong deviation up to almost 25% of the 1/d dependence of the radial breathing mode (RBM) used for single-walled CNTs. Compare: C. Spudat et al., Nano Letters 10, 4470 (2010)

Nanoscale x-ray investigation of magnetic metallofullerene peapods

We use carbon nanotubes for one-dimensional alignment of magnetic molecules, mainly endohedral fullerenes. The main goal is to control and study the influence of the directed exchange interaction in ferromagnetic single molecules as Dy2ScN@C80 as well as the magnetic dipolar interaction in paramagnetic molecules as N@C60 and Er3N@C80.

To gain element specific information, we use scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM). The red squares highlight the sites with Er signal from an Er3N@C80 peapod (left) imaged in TEM (right). The aim is to combine STXM with circular polarized magnetic dichroism to obtain element specific magnetic information on the nanoscale, which is difficult to achieve in HR-TEM, since magnetic fields disturb the electron optics.
